Camera Shy? My top tips to getting great wedding photos – without posing for hours on end

The most common thing I hear from people is that they hate having their photos taken. In fact, if I had £1 for everyone who said that to me…

Well, worry not my lovely couples! I promise you that on your wedding day, happiness will just shine out of you and you’ll look amazing. In fact, you’ll be having so much fun that you’ll hardly be aware of me and my camera!

However, to put your minds even more at ease I’ve put together some top tips to help you relax and, dare I say it, maybe even enjoy having your photograph taken on your wedding day.

Pick the perfect photography style

First things first, which style of photography suits you the best? Not all wedding photographers are the same and it’s really important to spend some time looking at lots of different photos and websites to find the look and style that you both love.

My more documentary photography style is perfect for couples who aren’t keen on posing for hours on end. It’s beautiful, classic and utterly authentic. I want you to be present on your wedding day, to enjoy every single moment whilst I capture the love, emotions and fun for you. I document your wedding so that you can look back in years to come and remember exactly how you felt on the day.

Choose the right wedding photographer for you

Once you’ve decided on which style of photography is for you, what next? Choosing the right wedding photographer!

After you’ve scrolled through websites and narrowed down your options, start getting in touch with people. You need to find out if they’re available on your wedding date. Then, once that’s all sorted and you’ve got your shortlist (or even got your heart set on one particular photographer) book in a chat with them. In person or over Zoom / Skype / Facetime. You’ll be spending a lot of time with your wedding photographer so it’s really important you feel comfortable around them. Plus, the more you relax with them the better your photos!

I really love getting to know my couples. I want to know your story, how the proposal went, what made you choose your wedding venue, what you love most about each other. I want you to feel like you’re not just booking a wedding supplier but that you’re having a new friend take your photographs.

Trust your chosen one!

This is key! Your wedding photographer is there to create beautiful, fun, joyous photographs of your day. You’ve done all your homework so you know that they’re experienced, you know that they can handle anything your day throws at them and, most importantly, you know that you love their photographs.

You can now relax, you’re in great hands and you don’t need to worry about who or what they are photographing. So now all you need to do is say your vows and get married to the love of your life!

Ignore me!

Yes, on your day, feel free to ignore me! You don’t need to stop what you’re doing and smile at my camera. I want you to forget I’m there and instead just enjoy your wedding. Of course there are times I’ll ask you to look at my camera – family formals for example – but during your couple’s portraits concentrate on each other. Have a giggle together and try to forget that I’m there!

Embrace the awkward!

I’m not going to lie. Even if you’ve had a couple of drinks (not too many before our portrait shoot!) and you’re completely loved up with your new spouse, it can still feel pretty awkward to jump in front of a camera. So, instead of hiding from that feeling and letting it show on your faces I just need you to embrace it (and each other!). Laugh through the awkwardness. Have a kiss whenever you don’t know what else to do. Listen to my chatter and chat back! I’ll be doing everything I can to make you both feel at ease.

Bonus tip – book a pre-wedding / engagement shoot

If you’re still feeling nervous then the best way to put those worries to bed is to get in front of my camera sooner rather than later. You’ll be able to experience a portrait shoot for yourself and see that there really is nothing to worry about.

Engagement shoots are available as an add on to all of my wedding photography packages so please ask for more information.
